Dear Ikram Bhai,

I firmly believe that a person, who fails to raise his voice against injustice(s) or as a minimum verbally denounce zullam, is not much better than a wild beast. Equally true, a society can never flourish where rules and laws are being implemented selectively.

A good friend of mine forwarded me a news item the other day. The story runs as follows:

As a result of another recent incident, a tea-stall owner of the cantonment area, Mohammed Ali, is languishing in the prison under Section 337 of the PPC on the report of Maj Naveed. The major got into a scuffle with Mr Ali over parking his car in front of the latter’s tea-stall.” http://www.dawn.com/2003/05/14/local21.htm

Ikram bhai, please try to check the veracity of this report and if true this poor guy must be helped out. Kindly, do something for him. I am sure, Allah Almighty would really appreciate this act of compassion and mercy of yours.

Assuming it authentic, the plight of that poor tea-stall owner languishing in jail due to a nasty army officer tears my heart apart. See, the major has manifestly no apprehensions for the [starving] family of the poor man.

The uniform should give a stronger conviction to respect the laws and not to play around with them. A leniency to check and condemn such activities will create monsters degrading the organisation as a whole. Frankly speaking there is no room for error when you are at the helm of the affairs.

I am unable to anticipate a bigger loss for a fighting force than the adverse perception of a common man about its uprightness. It would be disastrous for the country if people start perceiving the army equally corrupt and greedy as other civil organs of the state.

With very best regards,

Riffat Jahan
