What
to do with the Empire
The emerging geo-political
scenario in the aftermath of Afghanistan and Iraq.
[M B NAQVI]
|
The current drive by the US to establish its supremacy
over the whole of Asia can be called Empire building.
True, it is a new kind of Empire that has little to
do with colonialism. Like all imperialism, it comprises
the element of imperial power with a will to dominate
and channel the policies of subjugated (dominated) countries
for a purpose. Although it accepts no administering
responsibilities, it can expect benefits that are strategic
or economic or both. That poses a challenge to most
Asians and demands a response from them...more

The
Wild Card – Shi’as of Iraq
Shia population in Iraq
and the influence it will exert on the country’s
future.
[HAMID HUSSAIN]

|
The dramatic changes, which have occurred
in the last two decades, have shaken the Iraqi society
to its core. Every Iraqi is affected by these cataclysmic
and violent events. For Shi’as of Iraq things
are not much different even after almost a century.
In 1935, Shias submitted a document entitled Mithaq
al-Shab (Peoples Pact) to government giving a full range
of their grievances including political, economic, social
and religious.1 In 2003, they are again at the crossroads
of history...more

the quick Coalition victory
in the Iraq war and the murky quagmire of peace dissolving
into anarchy.
[Dr S M RAHMAN] |
Churchill named the last volume of his

Tragedy. Triumph for the reasons: “Between the

Will
they call the LCA – Jet-ayu?
the development of the Indian
Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).
[Gp Capt (Retd) S M HALI
] |
The
“indigenous” Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)
is still at least seven years away from its induction
in the Indian Air Force (IAF) but the Indian government
is impatient to name the LCA. Perhaps they want to make
up for the lost time since the project is not only behind
schedule by more than a decade, its budgeted cost has
jumped from Rs. 500 crore to Rs. 5000 crore...more

as an independent state, Pakistan is facing internal

Political Scene
what is happening in the

[MASOOD ANWAR] |
The
domestic political scene is all mixed up. President
General Musharraf’s visualization about democracy
and politics, Parliament’s future, socio-political
agenda of the religious parties, liberal mainstream
parties and their struggle for survival, the vision-military
should be brought in to be kept out of politics, economic
reforms and their continuation, describe the current

Sufficiency
of Intelligence in Iraq:
Emerging issues and Lessons Learned
The whole gamut of intelligence
available on Iraq before the war.
[ANTHONY H. CORDESMAN ]
|
The
current debate over US and British policy statements
regarding Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction
is disguising a much more serious set of intelligence
problems that will exist long after the current political
furore is over. The following analysis provides an
updated summary of these issues.
Intelligence
Strengths and Weaknesses
The Coalition had overwhelming overall superiority
in the intelligence aspects of IS&R. It had also
the advantage of experience and a vast range of intelligence
collection and analysis to build upon. The US had
used space and other intelligence assets to study
and target Iraq for more than 12 years from the summer
of 1990 to the beginning of 2003, and had had to prepare
for war several times after 1991...more
