True Leaders

A true leader is a true politician but a true politician
is not always a true leader. Truly speaking, what
has been missing in our leaders and politicians
is truth.
A true leader is easy to do business with. He is
not action-packed, he is momentous. He does not
shape history; he provides directions. He ceases
every passing moment and disciplines the life of
the people.
A true politician is uncensored. He is not a sub-nationalist.
He is a revisionist by temperament but not anti-status
quo when challenged. He is a worker by posture but
comes very close to being Machiavellian.....more

Of Boards & Committees

‘The News” in its 4 December issue
reported that a controversial poem is deleted from
Inter textbook. The fist letter of each verse of
the poem ‘The Leader’ when conjugated
in sequence spell “George W Bush’, and
the poem eulogises his leadership qualities rather
poetically. To top it all, the poet’s name
is not mentioned, which is considered a scholastic
requirement to lend credibility to the literature
included in the textbooks.
An official of the concerned Ministry wondered
as to how a number of committees that sift through
all textbooks failed to notice such a glaringly
objectionable material for more than a year. .....more

I am an Advocate and was very pleased to read
an article in Defence Journal on the issue of ‘PERJURY’.
Perjury is no doubt the root cause of concern in
our judicial system and the rule of law in a free
society can only be achieved through effective implementation
of laws. The problem of effective implementation
of laws is more complicated than is generally understood.
You have to prove even the genuine cases in the
courts of law through false and fabricated statements.
People usually do not voluntarily present themselves
for the cause of others and are reluctant to spare
time. Perjury, corruption and such problems are
genuinely rampant in the field of judiciary, but
the problem is not of false and frivolous statements
(Perjury) but of false and frivolous cases. And
due to these frivolous cases, the work load on the
courts is such that an ordinary trial court is unable
to cope with the situation. First, there is a general
tendency of filing false cases and secondly, false
and useless interlocutory applications are filed
in the pending cases. Resultantly too much time
is wasted on trivial and unsubstantial matters.
Even if the judge wants to expedite the matter it
is seen as mala fide intentions on the part of the
judge....more

Cricket – Cricket no more

A lot is being discussed on TV about the placid
pitches of Lahore and Faisalabad, which have helped
batsmen amass huge scores without yielding any results.
A foreseeable draw after five days of boredom is
not what the cricket fans spend their time and money
for. I am no cricket buff and it was quite revealing
for me to know that such pitches are specially prepared
in consultation.....more
