esides plundering the wealth of India for personal
gain and for the Raj, the British rulers of India
also plundered the human resources of their Empire,
especially for fighting its imperialist wars in
far corners of the world. Indian troops fought for
the Empire in China, the Middle East, Europe, and
Africa, etc. They also fought the Empire’s
war against Japan, and many thousands went into
captivity in Japanese POW camps, notorious for their
inhumanity. In India the British promoted the myth
of “The Martial Races”, whereby large
tracts of land, such as in Northern Punjab, were
deliberately left undeveloped so that their youth
could provide the cannon fodder for imperialistic
wars for want of any other job opportunities.
A few years ago, the British government announced
a Prisoner Award Scheme, whereby British and colonial
troops who were taken POWs by the Japanese became
eligible for a one-time award of ten thousand pounds
each. Renowned columnist Kamran Shafi wrote on numerous
occasions blasting the British for not giving this
award to the few surviving POWs (or their heirs)
now residing in Pakistan, because the scheme was
very selective, in favour of the Whites....more
